The species is one of the more reliably calcicolous North American lip ferns and responds well to incorporation of limestone grit or dolomitic chippings. Strongly acidic peat-based media at pH below 6.0 produce chlorotic foliage and poor growth, and should be avoided. Free and very sharp drainage is essential. Plant on a raised mound, in a rock crevice, or in a trough with generous drainage holes and a 2 to 3 centimetre layer of coarse gravel beneath the rooting mix. Water should disappear from the surface within seconds of application and the root zone should dry noticeably between waterings. Standing water or prolonged winter wet is the single most reliable cause of death. Low to moderate. In the native habitat the species roots in mineral debris of low organic content and low nutrient status, and it is physiologically adapted to modest fertility. A single light spring top-dressing of a dilute balanced fertiliser at one-quarter standard strength sustains container plants; open-ground specimens in a mineral mix rarely require feeding. Low, roughly 5 to 15 percent of the final mix. Use well-decomposed leaf mould or screened compost only, avoiding peat and fibrous bark that retain excess moisture. The organic fraction provides modest cation exchange and buffering but must never dominate the mix; excess organic content encourages rot and deviates from the natural rupestral substrate.

Light: Full sun to light shade, with the most compact and characteristic hair-cloaked fronds produced under high light. In the wild Cheilanthes eatonii grows on exposed rock faces that regularly receive direct midday sunlight, and in cultivation it performs best in open positions where the foliage receives four to eight hours of direct sun. Light shade from neighbouring rocks, low shrubs, or a trough lip is welcomed during the hottest part of the day in hot inland gardens but is not essential. Deep shade produces lax, thinly haired fronds, weak stipes, and increased susceptibility to fungal problems, and is the single most common cause of decline in container culture. In cool maritime climates with chronically overcast summers the species tolerates and even prefers full exposure. Reflected light and radiant heat from surrounding stone significantly improve vigour, mimicking the rupestral microclimate of the native habitat.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9, with the most reliable performance in zones 6 through 8 where continental summers and cold dry winters reproduce the native conditions most closely. Zone 5 cultivation succeeds in rocky, well-drained sites with reliable winter snow cover, though fronds typically bronze or desiccate in cold wind. Zone 9 is tolerated in inland Mediterranean climates but becomes marginal in humid subtropical gardens where summer warmth combined with rainfall promotes crown rot. In European collections the species performs well in continental rock gardens from central Germany through Poland and the Czech Republic corresponding roughly to RHS H5, and in drier parts of southern Britain given overhead shelter from winter rain. It is not suited to cool wet maritime zones 8 and 9 without a rain cover or alpine house.

Cheilanthes eatonii, Eaton's Lip Fern, is a compact evergreen xerophytic fern of 10 to 30 centimetres, native to rocky habitats across the southwestern United States and northern and central Mexico. Finely tripinnate fronds with bead-like ultimate segments and densely hair-cloaked undersides rise from short rhizomes wedged in limestone, sandstone, or igneous crevices. The species is one of the more cold-tolerant lip ferns, reliable in USDA zones 5 through 9 on sharply drained, neutral to calcareous mineral substrates in full sun to light shade. Cultivation succeeds in crevice gardens, troughs, and tufa walls where water is sparse and the crown stays dry; failure follows treatment as a conventional shade fern. Often now treated as Myriopteris eatonii following molecular revision of the cheilanthoid ferns, the species is propagated from spore with some cytotypes reproducing apogamously. A benchmark plant for specialist rock gardeners and a charismatic representative of the arid-land fern flora.
