Silver Thatch Palm

Coccothrinax argentea is one of about fifteen species in the genus, it is native to

extreme south Florida and the western Caribbean. It is a

small, slim, solitary palm with a crown of delightful glossy

green, fan-shaped leaves that have distinctive silvery

backs. The leaves are seen to best effect in a gentle breeze, when the upper and

lower surfaces contrast. Sometimes these palms grow in profusion, and are commonly

seen on the Florida Keys, not far from the road. The trunk is only a few inches

in diameter and covered, at least at the top, with a network of old leaf bases.

The small round fruits are produced in generous quantities and are dark mauve

when ripe.
